The Watch

This handsome stone fellow sits at the very edge of the rural cemetery in Nunica, Michigan. No one is sure who first placed him on the edge of the woods, looking back over the expanse of the cemetery. Was it for whimsical reasons, or was there a deeper message intended? Having done some reading on their symbolism in cemeteries, though, stone lions are apparently used to represent the eternal power of God.

While that is of passing interest, I'd rather think that this lion is standing guard over the memories of those departed who lived with courage and determination. I'll bet that's something he can relate to.
